3 Tips To Improve The Acoustics In Your Home Studio

by Kyle Kim

More and more people are choosing to record podcasts or upload original songs to video-sharing platforms. In order to effectively participate in these tasks, you need to have a quality studio space.

Building a home studio doesn't require a lot of retrofitting or costly equipment. One of the easiest things that you can do to improve the quality of your recorded sound is to improve the acoustics of your studio space.

1. Place Equipment Properly

The placement of essential recording equipment in relation to the architecture of your home studio is critical when it comes to effective acoustic treatment.

The goal of any acoustic treatment is to restore the natural sound balance in a room. Minimizing echoes and reflected reverberations can significantly improve the sound.

Be sure that any reflective surfaces are not placed in front of or behind your recording equipment. These surfaces can include windows, mirrors, and glass covering framed artwork. If you can't place your equipment to avoid having a window in the wrong position, cover over the window with thick drapes to help dampen the sound.

2. Manage the Corners

The corners in your home studio can wreak havoc on the quality of your sound if they aren't managed properly. Bass frequencies have a tendency to collect in corner spaces, which can create resonant nodes within your studio.

One of the easiest ways to avoid the negative effects of resonant nodes is to ensure that you don't leave the corners in your home studio empty. Place a piece of furniture, a lamp, a fake tree, or any other large object in each corner.

These objects will prevent the build-up of bass frequencies so that you can achieve a purer sound while recording.

3. Start With a Symmetrical Room

Symmetry is an important element when it comes to the acoustics of an architectural space. The ideal home studio will be a space that is as symmetrical as possible.

A room that is uneven or has an odd shape can cause each monitor speaker to produce a different sound. This interferes with the cohesiveness of the record.

If you have to utilize an asymmetrical space for your home recording studio, try to set up your monitoring speakers and microphone in a part of the room that is most symmetrical, then balance out the space with furniture.

More advanced acoustic treatment options are available through audio solutions professionals. These experts can utilize baffles, diffusers, and reflectors to help you achieve the perfect sound.
